Blueways of Lake County, Florida

We are so fortunate, as residents of Lake County, to have a system of Blueways. Blueways are paddling trails through the lakes and rivers of Lake County.

Anyone can access the Blueways of Lake County– they are not restricted to residents only. Most are available for both powered and nonpowered watercraft. Some are right in the heart of the Golden Triangle, and others are more remote, out in the Ocala National Forest.

My favorite Blueway so far is Blue Creek Run — it feels remote, although it begins in the small town of Astor and you’re never really too far from civilization. This is a side creek running from the St. John’s River north and west to Lake George. We use the Butler Street boat ramp in Astor — it’s a busy launch and kayakers need to be mindful to avoid creating obstacles for boaters backing up their trailers to launch or load powerboats. From this launch, it’s a short paddle to Blue Creek. Powerboats are plentiful on the river, but once you enter the Creek it’s a different story.

Now you’re in a peaceful place. Much of the shoreline on both sides is undeveloped as you move through Astor. Forest property owners have placed birdhouses at frequent intervals along the run, and it’s fun to find new ones as you become familiar with the area.

Lake County’s website for Blueways is a terrific resource. However, to make sure you have the best day possible on the water, please be sure to do some advance work. Make sure that the launches and landings shown on the maps are accessible when you plan to go – we have run into instances where a ramp was flooded (after a hurricane) and where ramps are simply not available.
