Snuggle Up When it’s Cold

Warmer weather is on the way, but I’m thinking about cooler weather and how well I sleep when it’s cool. Being cool and being cold are two very different things. A tent trip with overnight temperatures in the high 40s and low 50s taught me a lot about sleeping warm when it’s cold outside.

It is more complicated to stay warm in a tent than at home, but there’s no reason you can’t be comfortable in “Florida Cold” temperatures. These tips will not protect you from hypothermia in truly cold conditions, but this is, after all, My Exquisite Florida. One of the things I love about Florida is that I’m seldom in danger of developing hypothermia as I sleep snug in my tent.

In the Kitchen – Coq au Vin

This is the first of what I hope will be a quarterly feature for My Exquisite Florida – recipes that I have adapted for camping. Usually the recipes will have come from a source like New York Times or Joy of Cooking, but I’ve adapted them to suit my own likes and needs. They have become part of my regular rotation of camp meals, and I hope you will find this feature helpful as you’re planning your own camping menus. But this isn’t a foodie blog, and I’m not a foodie photographer. If there’s something I’m missing, please let me know! I’ll get better with practice.

Walking at Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive

A friend and I agreed to meet early one morning to drive through the Lake Apopka Wildlife Drive. Talk about a comedy of errors! First, we planned our adventure for a day that the Drive is closed. Next, the park where we were to meet has closed the part of the park that allows access to the trail we had hoped to walk on. But we found that the St. Johns Water Management District had already come up with a solution that really worked in our favor, and if you click the link you will find that we needn’t have gone stumbling blindly around, because the WMD works hard to get us the information we need.

Great Backyard Bird Count

Great Backyard Bird Count

Calling all birders!

The 2021 Great Backyard Bird Count will be held from Friday, Feb. 12 through Monday, Feb. 15. This event, co-hosted by the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, National Audubon Society and Birds Canada, is a great opportunity for birders of all levels to contribute to our understanding of bird populations.

https://ebird.org/homeTo participate, you will need to have a free eBird account, which is quick and easy to set up. During the count, observe and record birds using either the Merlin or eBird app for at least a 15 minute stretch. You can observe birds in your back yard but data submissions aren’t limited to around the house – checklists from anywhere are welcomed for the event.

In 2020 there were over 250,000 participants worldwide who observed over 27 million birds! That seems like a high benchmark to beat but participation has been increasing year after year – let’s make 2021 the best year yet! You can follow along with the count’s progress using Cornell’s live map of eBird submissions.

For more information on how to participate, head to BirdCount.org for more detailed instructions.

Women Naturalists of Color

I wanted to observe Women’s History Month with a list of women naturalists. While there are long lists of white women and their contributions, I was surprised at how much effort it took to find non-white women and their contributions.  But: there’s no shortage of exciting reading about the contributions of women of color naturalists and environmentalists if you’ll take the time to look, and so, for Black History Month, I present to you this brief list of women of color naturalists.

Packing for the Panhandle Part II

I am packing for a two week tent camping trip in the Florida Panhandle. I’m meeting my friend Sharol and we are anticipating two weeks of kayaking, hiking, and hanging out in nature, soaking up all the good stuff you get from earthing and forestbathing.

This will be the longest tent camping trip I’ve taken in many years. While I want to have as many comforts as possible, I don’t want to undo the simplicity of living in a tent. So with that in mind, here are my suggested guidelines for packing for a tent camping trip (car camping, as opposed to backpack camping). As with my first article of camping suggestions, this is not a list of items, but a list of things to think about as you prepare for your own trip.

I’m campaigning again. . .Pam Jennelle for North Lake Hospital District

This will be my last campaign entry here at My Exquisite Florida, but I feel strongly enough about this race that I’m using every opportunity to speak to District voters. If you’re not a District voter, my apologies.

The North Lake Hospital District was created by the Florida Legislature and adopted by District voters in 2016. The District provides a means to partially fund health care services delivered by local hospitals and clinics to uninsured people. Governed by an elected unpaid board of six members who reside in the district, the Board determines and adopts a millage rate, capped at one mill, that determines the amount of property tax levied on District residents. This millage determines the total budget available for use in funding care for the uninsured in North Lake County.

·       In 2016, almost 59% of voters in the District voted to keep the hospital tax. This vote demonstrated that here in Lake County, we value health care and believe everyone should have an avenue to access that care. We believe that a healthy community is a productive community, and that all residents benefit when their neighbors are healthy.

·       My experience and commitment to this District is unparalleled in this race. I have earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology and a master’s degree in health informatics. My professional experience includes a social service background and a decade of experience as a clinical research coordinator, an outcomes analyst, and a project manager for Florida Hospital – AdventHealth. I have worked with volunteers, community partners, and other stakeholders on community-based projects to improve the delivery of healthcare.

·       My opponent, who has a real estate background, is on record questioning the value and transparency of the District. She wants to know who provides services, who receives funds and what funds they have received. When I decided to run for this office, I was easily able to see who provides services, who receives funds, and what funds they have received when I visited the Board’s website. The Board is entirely transparent, with meetings open to the public and notices of meetings, minutes, budgets, requests for funding, audited reports, and much more available to the public by simply visiting the website.

I want to put my experience to work advocating for District residents and protecting the District’s ability to meet the needs of its residents. I’m reaching out to all voters in the District, regardless of party affiliation, because access to adequate healthcare is not a partisan issue. We know that a healthy community is more affordable when health problems are addressed with the right care, at the right time, in the right setting, and a strong Hospital District will ensure that this happens.

Every family deserves access to the kind of care that provides the best health outcomes. Every District resident deserves the best representation possible. My background and experience are the foundation from which I will provide this representation.

I would like to ask you to mark your ballot for me now, if you are voting by mail. You can mark your ballot for me at early voting October 19-31. And of course, you may mark your ballot for me on November 3. And after you have marked your ballot for me in Seat One, please consider voting for Melody Duckins for Seat Five. I hope that you will reach out to me if you would like to know more about me, my candidacy, or the District. Thanks so much for your consideration.

Here’s my first blog post about the campaign.
